Many applications for NIR do not fall under common headings. NIR can be applied nondestructively and with no sample preparation to many different fields. NIR applications work best on material that have strong OH, CH, NH or SH absorbers. Because NIR models are empirically developed, NIR is most useful in applications where the same product is measured on a routine basis. The tobacco industry uses NIR for nicotine analysis and menthol content analysis. Wood products industries that make particle board panels and products use NIR for moisture analysis and adhesive content analysis.
Some other types of NIR measurements include: moisture in soaps, nicotine content in tobacco, menthol concentration in cigarettes and adhesive level in particle board chips.
