Although NIR is primarily used in production-related applications, it has found great utility in research and development facilities. Pharmaceutical R&D often uses NIR in pilot plants operations to help evaluate daily processes. Work is being done to understand blend uniformity, granulation drying, dissolution profile prediction and lyophilization processes. Chemical R&D facilities use NIR to optimize process performance and product quality.
Common R&D NIR parameters measured include: moisture content, coating thickness, roller compaction hardness, blend uniformity, granulation, particle size and prediction of dissolution profile.
